I think basketball was the first sport we learned in English. A lot of sports in the Philippines tend to revolve around shooting (basketball is one of them).
Singueta's favourite sport was basketball, but we learned a lot of other sports in English as well. Singueta would bring basketballs to school and play the sport alone. It was always a bit of a chore, since the other children would play and play, but Singueta loved it. Singueta always had basketballs, and would bring them to school at school events like birthday parties. He always wanted to play, and even when he was not allowed, he would try to play. He would always play the game, but he would not be allowed to shoot, so he would pretend that he could. Singueta was an only child. His parents were from Nigeria. He was very sad when he was born. It was very painful for his parents to find out that his dad was a homosexual. Singueta was a good student. He started attending school when he was 6. He loved his school and the teacher. He played the trumpet and did well. He wanted to go to college and get a good education. One day, he got bored and he did not want to go back home. He told his mom that he wanted to stay with his brother. So he went back home and started playing with his brother on the computer. He got more into school than he ever did before. He was a student for the year. He was really good at school and his schoolmates were really nice. After he graduated he was working at a local bar. Then he got his first job at a car dealership. His sister told him he could not have a car unless he started working. So he joined his brother in work. When he was a customer he asked if he could look at some cars. The owner of the dealership said sure. The two men went to the showroom and the salesman got ready to show his car. The owner walked up and said "Hey!" The two men turned around. The dealer said "I don't need you to look at my car. I need you to buy it. And if you don't want to, I don't have to pay a whole lot of money. If you do, I won't even bother to tell you it's a used car." The owner said "Cool. So tell me how much is this thing and how much do you think I'll get?" He was a little confused by the salesman's question. The salesman went into the back room and sat down to wait. The dealer said "Well, there's a few things here. I'm not sure if you'll like what I'm gonna do. If you're really interested in buying this thing, you'll have to sign a contract." The salesman said "What's that? A contract? Okay. This one is pretty simple. The guy that sold it to me, he's a big name in the world of trade. He was on a trading trip for a little while and he's been wanting to buy some of the stuff from this guy. He said he was gonna go get him this stuff and he'll give me the stuff back when he's finished. Now, I need to have this thing. He's gonna give me $1,500, that's all I need. If I can make it to the end of my trip without losing the thing, he'll be happy. So, that was the deal. So, it was like, I had a meeting with this guy. He called me up and was like, "I'm gonna give you $1,500 if you'll take me out on this trip. It's like the ultimate fuck you, but it's all good." So, I told him, "Sure." So we went to New York. We went to, I think, the West Village. There were a bunch of places, you know, where you'd go to fuck around. There was, like, a club that had sex parties and we were, like, at the club one night. And, like, we went up to this dude and we were in there and this guy was like, "Hi. We're the fucking Red Hot Chili Peppers and we're here to play the party." And I'm like, "Uh huh. Where are we? Is there anywhere to stay?" And the guy was like, "You can't have sex with me. No one else's allowed." I was like, "Okay. What are we going to do?" And he's like, "If you want to do it, then you'll have to get dressed." We'd had a few drinks by then and I was just like, "Fuck." [Laughs.] But I got a cab and went to the club. And we went in and I think we were supposed to stay for about 45 minutes but he just, he was all like, "You're not staying. You're leaving now." [Laughs.] So we just left and I went back to my apartment and slept on the couch for a while. And I woke up in the morning and he was there with this big, giant backpack on and he was like, "Yeah, I'm leaving." And I was like, "Wait. Where are we going? What's going on?" He just said, "I'm leaving. Don't say anything." [Laughs.] I'm like, "What?" [Laughs.]
AVC: I was just curious what it was like to live in that world, to have someone like this in your life.
DG: Yeah, you know, I was super surprised to see this. It was a big surprise because I had never met him. I mean, I knew of him, but it's such a different kind of guy. I met him at a party where he was on the guest list. He was just a really nice guy. You know, not really into partying, but that's the kind of guy that I liked. I was really happy to meet him. I'm really, really surprised. I don't know, we've never really talked about it.
Yeah, I mean the situation was kind of in reverse in Japan. Japan has a lot more dating options.
