1. He was in the Philippines for a short time, and has been there since.
He visited the Philippines around 2 months ago, with his partner. We asked his partner for some advice on his first trip to the Philippines, and she responded: "There were lots of gay bars and clubs, but the biggest place was the nightclub on the corner of Alabang and N. Kalang. I think this is where he first met the Filipinos. But after his first night there, he got a bad feeling about them. They were just straight guys, and he felt like they were judging him. After a couple of months, he decided to move away." (He also said that the Philippines is not as big a gay -friendly place as people think, and that's okay.) And then, after another couple months, he returned home. Here's a few other things he told us. He's never met anyone from a country that isn't a Muslim country, or from another Asian country. He says that he's never met any Filipinos who can speak English. He's always gotten the sense from them that they hate him because he's gay, because they're scared to talk to him. "They're terrified. They don't want to talk to me. They're like, 'I won't go to your country if you're not gay," he says. He's also never met another gay person from America.
"I feel like I'm being discriminated against in the Philippines and I've got nothing to gain by speaking up," he says. "I have nothing to hide. I'm just me. I don't care what you think about me." But this week, as he and his girlfriend were leaving to fly to Malaysia, the American asked, "How are you, Mommy?" and left an awkward look on her face. He says he doesn't know how to respond to the gesture and that it "doesn't really feel good." "It doesn't feel right, it doesn't feel like I'm being recognized for my sexuality," he says. "It feels like you're insulting me in some way. If they're going to treat you as a special, different person because of your sexuality, it would be a lot better if you just didn't act that way." The American tells THR he hopes his case "will send a message to all of our LGBT gay dating sites online friends who may feel as though they can't be themselves in this world." He says he's been trying to connect with other gay men for years through his blog and is happy that this is starting to happen. "I feel like I have a place, where I can just be myself and not be judged." He says the two are planning to get married, but first they've to sort out their finances. "I don't know if I'm going to be able to put out as much material as I wanted to," he says. "I'm not ready for that yet."
He also meet gay guys online has a few more things to say about the whole thing. "I'm hoping my case will just spark a conversation that maybe this is something that should be talked about more," he says. "Maybe there's someone out there who is not going through what I went through. I'm hoping this case will get people to talk about it. If it does, I want to be the first person to write a book about it, and that way we can get it in schools. I want to get it out there, and then we can start talking about it."
He has not received any responses yet from any of the sites he contacted, but is optimistic that someone might be interested in writing a book about his experience. "I want to tell people, 'I went through this, too.' I don't know if there's anyone else out there who went through it," he says. "Maybe if I just put out the information on here, maybe there will be some other guys who go through it who will be inspired to write a book."
Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) exist for gay men everywhere to get together and talk about their issues, but often they feel like they're not seen as a legitimate option. While that's a problem, GSA's need not be exclusive to gay men. "There are gay men who have GSA groups, too, and I'm in one. There are women who do," says Simeone. "It's not a one-size-fits-all thing, it's an expression of people's needs."
For now, the most direct way to find gay-straight alliances is through the websites like Grindr, Scruff, and Tinder, which allow users to look for gay-straight alliances. It's important to note that gay-straight alliances aren't always open, and they can have other issues such as being run by women who want to be seen as equals. But it is also important to note that Simeone is a gay man and is very passionate about what he does. And, of course, he's a man. But it is something he does because he thinks it's the right thing to do. In his own words: "I want to raise awareness of how different people view this lifestyle. The fact that gay guys are considered 'different' by other people is a result of prejudice, fear and ignorance, not a desire for us to stay away from each other. We need to be willing to see people for who they are, and treat one another with respect, whether we're gay or straight. The Internet can be a great place for all kinds of conversations, but I'm not going to be one of the people posting comments about how much they love their girlfriend or boyfriend and how sad it is that they can't have their own boyfriend and want to hang out with me, so they're out there looking for a girlfriend and my goal is to help them find one."
